WHO NEEDS DONUTS?

Who needs donuts when you've got love?"" concludes donut collector Sam after he rescues an old woman who is drowning in coffee. Never mind what goes before; Stamaty would be the first to agree that it doesn't matter. Especially as the drawings -- a glut of wacky detail -- make a point of time-consuming pointlessness. Just taking in all the surreal monstrosities and goofy vehicles in the street scene that makes up the title page will boggle the eyeballs, and reading all the signs that are squeezed in makes it a day's work. Every page is crammed with so many elephant-headed birds, winged buildings, crazy T-shirts and printed messages (a bumpersticker reads BUMPER STICKER, a newspaper headling reads ""PERSON OPENS PICTURE BOOK TRIES TO READ FINE PRINT"") that it's a relief to turn to one page containing nothing but thousands of donuts. It's the sort of thing that might be kept on hand in the bathroom, but only where no one is waiting in line.
