Rather unlike other books in the series (see 1952, p. 260-261 for comment on the series as a whole) this one takes a typical incident in a period and not a historical event. Vigilante action during the opening up of Montana is told through the lives of the Shelby's settlers near Bannock City. They help capture a road gang operating against both the gold prospectors nearby, and the farmers. The gang head turns out to be the sheriff and action is taken. But yarns and repetitions tend to deaden the adventure here.
