THE SACRED FALLS

A bit dullish -- this romance of a Hindu girl and a Moslem boy, set against the problem of British manoeuvring for peaceful control of Indian people. The using of the water from a sacred shrine is the spark that arouses anti-British sentiment, and it is the governmental personages who keep the mobs in check, while the death of a money lender, fiance of the Hindu girl and reputed victim of the hatred of the Moslem boy adds fuel to the flame. But all -- with some heroics -- comes out well. Detailed picture of Indian life and customs, suggesting P.C. Wren rather than Channing's usual mystic-adventure yarns.
