PEL AND THE PARTY SPIRIT

Complexities multiply as three puzzling cases gradually come together for Burgundy's Chief Inspector Pel (Pel and the Predators, etc., etc.), mostly because of smart police work by subordinates Darcy, DeTrod, Nosjean, and even young protÉgÉe Didier: A 30-year-old corpse found sealed in a 13th-century tower in the ancient mountaintop village of Puyceldome; two murders--one victim a policeman--along a well-travelled highway; and the kidnapping of young horsewoman Sybille Jundt. Connections to drug-dealing in Marseilles, a girls' academy, and an old robbery are painstakingly explored before the dramatic denouement--which takes place as Puyceldome celebrates its 730th anniversary with vivid, medieval pageantry. The author's best in a series that steadily grows livelier and more engrossing.
