CHUNGKING LISTENING POST

Publisher: Creative Age

An account of the work and problems of American missionaries in China after Pearl Harbor, written by the Maryknoll priest who coordinated and financed them from Chungking. A close-up of the missioners -- their intrigue with the circumvention of the Japanese -- their heroic ministrations to the Chinese -- their suffering at the hands of their captors and torturers. A tribute to the missioners and Chinese, with full details of torture, with personal glimpses of China's leaders. A modest, self-effacing report, anecdotal in quality. Too bad it isn't better written.
