DRUGS IN THE BODY: Effects of Abuse

Yoslow's first book delivers more than one volume's worth of dense yet readable information. He methodically delineates effects on body parts, over brief and prolonged periods, for cocaine, opiates, heroin, cannabis, hallucinogens, amphetamines, etc., and for similar synthetics that have medicinal uses. Most of the chapters on drugs begin with countries of origin and history of use and end with causes of death. Some of the material is riveting: cannabis probably appeared in the Old Testament (in Samuel, under the name honeywood); Hitler may have been addicted to amphetamines; and indeed these drugs were casually dispensed to troops on both sides during WW II; and, for those of us who don't know these things, the preferred method of PCP manufacture is in the household toilet. Yoslow's easy, repetitive organization makes for accessible reference; and his ""just the facts, Ma'am"" approach--without the usual preaching--should garner reader respect.
