Adjusting to a new sibling can be difficult, but Mosiman’s picture book demonstrates a smooth transition.
Max has been eagerly awaiting the arrival of a baby brother, Henry, and dreaming about all the exciting activities the brothers can share. When Henry comes home, however, Max realizes that not only is a newborn too little to play with, but he also brings a lot of changes to their home. Mom, Daddy, Nani, and Dapa are so wrapped up in the new baby that Max feels “mixed up.” After his dad offers Max the chance to get away for a week in order to feel better, Max quickly realizes that they’re needed at home, and he, being more grown up, can help by interacting with the baby. He soothes Henry with songs, tells him stories, and holds him tightly. With this new helpful mindset, Max is able to appreciate Henry as he currently is, knowing they’ll be brothers forever. Sudovykh’s illustrations feature a dreamy and emotive pastel palette with the right balance of details for readers of all ages. The story is told in rhyming verse that will make it a favorite for family read-alouds. Max’s family presents as white with light skin, freckles, and blond and red hair.
A gorgeous read about adjusting to a newborn sibling that models age-appropriate emotional communication and perspective.
