More story than mystery, this, as the theatre plays backdrop to romance and murder. An ambitious young, New tumbles into a dresser's job in the very theatre she had thought to avoid, for she hadn't wanted to reveal the distant relationship to a famous leading man until she'd found her own niche. But the resemblance was apparent to all, and and pressures she'd not anticipated brought her big chance and almost at the same time, the mysterious death of the character actor, neglected husband of the leading lady. An involved set of circumstances gave ample cause for suspicion in various quarters. but the astute and Inspector Alleyn and his all, and pinned the crime on the victim of petty Good reading. If not wholly fair-to-the-reader solution.
