Tagging along through a day of big league spring training is an exciting enough project for a community helper, though it's harder to imagine the easy reader who doesn't already know such basics as the names of the positions, the rules of the game (""In an inning each team has a chance to bat and a chance to field. And there are nine innings in a game""), and even the shape of the catcher's mitt and the game of pepper. The whole outing is rudimentary, but it's the illustrations--with young John looking like the kid in those vitamin company pamphlets--that really strike out.
