A perennial this -- though under different editors (this is Martha Foley's second volume), thirty inclusions represent a good cross section of magazines, types of authors and substance. There's sentiment, in Laidlaw's The Little Black Boys; there's regional flavor in Faulkner's The Bear; there are children, in Rachel Field's Beginning of Wisdom and Stegner's Chip Off the Old Block; there is emotion in Gray's Threnody for Stalics; there is humor in D'Agostino's The Dream of Angelo Zara -- there are styles for all tastes. Familiar names (Kay Boyle, Vicki Baum, Vardis Fisher, Nancy Hale, William Saroyan, and others; and there are people who are new to me. There's a somewhat more popular touch in selection, the result a readable collection.
