KIRKUS REVIEW

Story Magazine's Martha Foley carries on the O'Brien tradition with a collection made in his manner, with the same criteria of fine writing and a true sense of the contemporary, but, it seems to me, a better sense of entertainment value. There is less showing of newcomers; the old rank and file names include Kay Boyle, David De Jong, Mackinlay Kantor, Nancy Hale, Irwin Shaw, John Steinbeck, William Saroyan, and so on. Some characters familiarized in books reappear- Sam Small, Flicka, Big Doc's Girl and Sally Benson's St. Louis Smiths. Good reading -- good writing.
