A much-wanted possession turns out to be more of a nuisance than otherwise when a young elephant named Trudy, after holding her breath (which doesn't work) and making 36 mud hats (which does), finally gets the straw hat she's been longing for ever since she saw her friend Wanda's. But, as Trudy complains after a disappointing day, ""With my hat on all day I can't hear; I can't see; I can't play; I can't find Wanda; and I itch."" Trudy's solution is a matter of perspective: ""I'm going to save [my hat] for special days."" Fair enough, and amiably if not involvingly depicted in Wallner's flat cartoons. But it's still a caprice.
