Born in 1860, Eaton reminisces about the Middle Border that he knew as a child when Oklahoma was still Indian Territory and the marks of Quantrell's raids had not yet been obliterated in Kansas. He took an oath to revenge the murder of his father, worked for years on his shooting and riding to further this vengeance and served in a Border cavalry regiment. He had horseback races with Belle Starr, had two wives and fathered eight children and lived to see both Indians and grasslands -- all of his old West -- swept away by the encroachments of urban society. Rambling and sentimental this nostalgic recall will have an appeal for fans of the true West.
