An unimportant and unconvincing novel about a middle-aged woman who is forced by circumstances to bring up her sister-in-law's children, a boy and a girl. The girl she dislikes and bullies in good old-fashioned style; the boy, she grows to love, but cannot win his affection, because his loyalty is to his sister. Eventually, Fate takes a hand, and the woman dies in a stroke brought on by anger.
