A noted non-fiction writer tells the story of his 1960 two month cruise by air over 55,000 miles of continental United States. The trip, deemed the ""dream of every private pilot"", is further described by the work of a professional photographer who went along. Choosing a Beechcraft Debonair for stamina, the two travel over mountains, plains, sea, and volcano. They visit cities and towns, air bases, and Indian country. And through it all, the problems of modern flying, of new rulings, of how to navigate in all kinds of weather, and of how to avoid crashes, are discussed in an informal yet effective way. A valuable glossary of air traffic control terms concludes the book. Enjoyable, but probably aimed for a small audience of flyers and air enthusiasts.
