A Survey of Contemporary Writing in English on Africa and out of Africa places great emphasis on ""prose writing, particularly the novel, in which great social realism and commentary play au outstanding part."" West Africa in an English Light; West Africa by Africans; East and Central Africa (more frivolously dealt with by novelists); South African literature over which ""the ugly shadow of color"" hangs; Neo-African literature are reviewed more with a view to surface social analysis than to literary quality. A selected reading list of modern African literature through 1966 concludes. An unassuming study of no particular depth.
