Saturnin Dax, Commissaire, playing for time, in the murder of an ex-dancer whose married life and complicated past provide him with many missing facts. In bringing to a conclusion a ""stupid affair"", Dax displays his ferret cunning, and exploits his ability to nail a criminal after other killings. Carrying Gallic logic to its conclusion.
