THE LIFE OF CHRIST: in Masterpieces of Art and the Words of the New Testament

This promises to be one of the outstanding Christmas gift books of the season. There are to be 44 plates in full color, fine reproductions of masterpieces by such artists as della Robbia, Bruegel, Botticelli, Memling, Tintoretto, Giotto, Leonard da Vinci, Titian, Rembrandt, Fra Angelico, Caravaggio; there are prints taken from wood reliefs, mosaics, stained glass windows, illuminated manuscripts, enamels, drawn from the period from the 11th century through the 16th when genius drew on the Christ story for inspiration. Episode by episode, in paintings and in passages from the New Testament, the story unfolds. The Protestant edition uses the King James version; the Catholic, the Douay version. Marvin Ross, who made the selection of the pictures, is now consultant to the Chicago Art Institute, and contributes an Introduction to the Protestant edition; James Lane to the Catholic. At the moment there is nothing in the way of advance material on which to report further, but with the pre-publication price a factor, this announcement is made.
