The most readable popular history of China that I know. And the most human. Instead of attempting a meticulous and categorical tracing of the intricate web of successive dynasties, the author has given a skeleton outline of the historical background, and painted against it, in graphic pictures, the ways of life, the developments in culture and learning, the contributions made by successive epochs to the traditions and inheritance of China. One had actually a feeling of how people lived in far off days. The history brings us right up to the present, with -- wisely -- no attempt at prophecy or interpretation of how far and how deeply the Soviet influence has spread, or what will be the next step of Japan, against her neighbor. A book that will adequately meet the needs of the average public library, or school library, for a popular reference book on Chinese history and customs.
