There's quality, and delicacy to these post-Victorian vignettes forming a novel, and concerning the Arnols and the Marshall children who become their ""sacred burdens"". Uncle Augustus, jovial, nouveau-riche, downtrodden and his voluminous, complacent and divinely infallible Sarah are left an assortment of five nieces and nephews whom they never quite understand, never really like, but whom they are determined to rear dutifully. This is the story of their adolescence , the importation of a tutor, of a governess, and various crises precipitated by Paul -- the intellectual, Rebecca -- moody and musical, Gus -- the charmer, and the twins who are so completely identified that they assume each others personalities. Pleasingly, amusingly, fastidiously handled.
