WHAT NEXT, DOCTOR PECK?

A good-humored account of real back country doctoring takes a very young Dr. Peck back to his first practice in 1916 as a company doctor for the Western Pacific Railway at a construction camp, then a mining town, in Utah. Along with stories of his clientele- down and outers- some obdurate old timers- camp following hustlers- and Indians (here science versus superstition provided some difficult choices) there were interesting cases and characters- the Olsens who kept their casket in the living room-- the sheeptender who tended his stomach ulcer with carbolic acid to ease the pain- etc., etc. and it offers human interest material (rather than medical) in a good humored handling. The market too will have to be unspoiled.
