A true story of Tobias Schneebaum's unarmed journey through the Peruvian jungle, the theme of this book suffers from a somewhat inept treatment. Told in verse, the narrative introduces the reader to the climate, animals, and people of the jungle as well as to the intrepid illustrator, Tobias Schneebaum. Unfortunately, the verse is so awkward as to cast a somewhat ridiculous and trivial light on the entire expedition--""Oh the monkeys, the monkeys in the great green trees--he couldn't get away from the little old monkeys."" A well intentioned but amateur approach to a potentially interesting idea.
