BLACKIE AND HIS FAMILY

If I'd not watched hundreds of birds engaged in a battle with a snake that had climbed a tree in search of baby nestlings, I'd find this story of how a pair of black-birds brought up their family hardly credible. For here is a tale of adventure in nature, as the blackbirds battle their enemies,-a hawk, a ground squirrel, a snake, the cats in the home garden. Here too is the picture of how they summon help, their own kind -- and the lady of the garden. And of how most of the nestlings win through to independence just in time for the mid-summer migration.
