by Mary D. Lankford & photographed by Jesse Herrera ‧ RELEASE DATE: March 1, 1994
A straightforward, detailed description of a traditional 15th-birthday celebration—in this case, that of Mexican-born Martha Jimenez, an eighth-grader in Austin, Texas. In an introduction, Lankford compares this formal rite of passage to a bar mitzvah or the Navajo kinaalda; with its elaborate clothing, attendants, special mass, dancing, and feast, it also resembles a wedding. Photos follow the preparations and festivities step by step; whether in color or b&w, they're sometimes a bit dark, but overall their informality underscores the authenticity of the proceedings. This will be particularly welcome as the only children's book on this important ceremony. A note debates the unresolved issue of ``Hispanic'' vs. ``Latina.'' Further reading; index. (Nonfiction. 9-14)

by Gerald Hausman & Loretta Hausman ‧ RELEASE DATE: Nov. 1, 1999
Man’s best friend is at the heart of 13 curious tales culled from worldwide traditions, crossing oceans and time. From Africa to Arabia, China to Japan, the stories span a range in both tone and subject matter. While many of the stories appeared in the Hausmans’ The Mythology of Dogs (1997), those regathered here are the archetypal and mythological, the fanciful and magical, including ghost dogs, immortals, and canine heroes who speak and sing, marry princesses, transform, catch flying bullets in their teeth, and recover magic rings. A two-inch-tall faery dog shines in “King Herla’s Hound,” while the mighty Thor’s companion reveals why the watchdog Rottweiler’s fierce growl sounds like thunder in the throat in the pourquoi tale “Thunder Mouth Dog.” The Hausmans are well-grounded in both folkloric elements and storytelling sensibility, arranging their tales in short chapters such as “Trickster Dogs,” “Enchanted Dogs,” and “Guardian Dogs”; they punctuate each with an explanatory, if complex, punchline of sorts. Moser’s characteristically striking design portrays the akita and basenji, spaniel and shar-pei as if the dogs posed for portrait sittings. Singular compositions focus on each dog as individual, without ornament or fanfare, as if in sculptural relief, carved against the surrounding vast plane of the page. by Jackie French Koller ‧ RELEASE DATE: Oct. 1, 1999
Koller (Bouncing on the Bed, p. 143, etc.) portrays a Narragansett nickommoh, or celebratory gathering, from which it is very likely the tradition of Thanksgiving was drawn. As explained in an exemplary note—brief, clear, interesting—at the end of the book, these gatherings occurred 13 times a year, once each lunar month. The harvest gathering is one of the larger gatherings: a great lodge was built, copious food was prepared, and music and dance extended deep into the night. Koller laces the text with a good selection of Narragansett words, found in the glossary (although there is no key to pronunciation, even for words such as Taqountikeeswush and Puttuckquapuonck). The text is written as a chanted prose poem, with much repetition, which can be both incantatory and hackneyed, as when “frost lies thick on the fields at dawn, and the winged ones pass overhead in great numbers.” Mostly the phrases are stirring—as are Sewall’s scratchboard evocations—and often inspirational—for this nickommoh puts to shame what has become known as the day before the launch of the holiday shopping season.
