Virtually a one volume course in modern decorating, as the Interior Decoration Editor of McCalls Magazine takes one through the intricacies of good taste, hows and whys, of decorating the modern home in the modern manner. She skillfully avoids the extremes, and is flexible in presenting basic principles which makes possible an adaptation of the modern and the traditional for modern rooms. Practical handbook, presuming one wants to study the subject from the ground up, or that one has the opportunity to plan and execute a modern home, unhampered by possessions. One could wish she had given somewhat more space to the use of what one has (there are scattered anecdotes and examples, but the general impression is that of working with an empty slate). Nonetheless, she has succeeded admirably in showing the neophyte how to approach the problem, how to fit the home to the family needs and interests, how to analyze the problems of background, color, lines, and form, composition, scale, balance; how to use architectural features, table fittings. On the whole, she has held to her aim of making this a usable book for the average budget. At the close, she supplies a list of modern designers, which adds to the books value for students.
