Competently written and tightly plotted, this is Shane D'Urfey's story, set in 1929-1933 in Fidelia and Queensport of the mid-South, of Leo Sanger's ambition to build a great suspension bridge spanning his home town's river. When politics and its schemers threaten his firm's chances of getting the contract, Leo faces the temptation of offering a bribe to make sure of its being awarded to Mallord's. He is left alone when exposure threatens, but with the help of Charlotte, Shane's old sweetheart now despairingly in love with Leo, the contract is safe. -Then his married life, his loyalties to his children and the job he has dreamed of all disintegrate and his life becomes a sacrifice to the bridge, which is finished by others. High level circulating libraries but not obligatory for small libraries with a restricted budget.
