A pleasant, somewhat purposeful, romance in which Beth Fairfield, successful as a commercial artist in New York, is not as successful when she falls in love with Bill Wayne whose tastes run to more social, solvent women. On a trip to Michigan Beth for the first time discards the image of Bill when she meets Henri Beaubien- an industrialist- is persuaded into marriage- and then learns of his dublous ethics, his lack of social conscience towards the migrant workers, his increasing infidelities. It is only with Henri's final abandonment of Beth that she is free once more for Bill who by this time has been toned down and sobered up for stability by the war. The feminine formula, acceptably amplified.
