A long, wholesome woman's novel, with the Great Lakes and its freighters and shipping as a background for feminine solutions to marital problems. It has somewhat of the early Ferber-Hurst feel in the emotional aspects, and is a satisfying and substantial piece for more serious rentals. The story includes three generations, and of how each woman, offered marriage with money, ease and security, took the hard way and married the men they had to support and protect. Saving themselves and their families by their ability to cook, this line of women wore the pants in an effort to make -- and keep -- their men happy.
