CANON BRETT

Cannon Brett was rector of a parish, and had been elected Canon of the proposed rethedral in a large American city. This is a serious and somewhat controversial novel in which the conflict between his personal life and his acceptance of the traditions of his church creates a situation beyond his handling. He has fallen in love with a married women, who leaves her alcoholic husband, and the Bishop, drawn as a ""money-changer"" and hypocrite, uses the rumor of their relationship (an innocent one) as a lever to rid himself of a man who has not been afraid to side with the Dean in an issue which had resulted in the Dean's removal, a sad blow to the spirit behind the building of the cathedral. Brett gives up Lisa, who divorces her husband, thus becoming yet more ""untouchable"" in the eyes of his church. A human tale, convincingly handled.
