KIRKUS REVIEW

A great deal of sound and useful information is packed into this book, and it serves not only as a general reference book with a modern outlook, but is geared to be valuable for various income brackets. A brief survey, comprehensive and definitive (sometimes inadvisably so, as when a single drawing seems to limit the scope of a period or a type), this covers major points of taste, color, balance, periods, room planning and arrangement, how to assess values in selecting furniture and fabrics, accessories, and cutting corners financially by making your own slip covers, curtains, etc. The best part of the book, for many, will be that section which gives guides to judging values, workmanship, etc. On the whole, the format is attractive, the photographs and informative sketches are helpful, but frankly, the so-called humorous spots fall flat.
