. . . to just about everyone who saw South Pacific or The Sound of Music or Peter Pan (her very favorite), and getting to know her isn't very hard. Mary Virginia Martin was born in Texas in 1913 and as a child was sure that she would find a stage somewhere. So after her short-lived marriage at sixteen (and the child she left back home with her mother) she went to Hollywood and had various odd jobs like singing in a bar which still didn't take the bloom off the peach or the ingenue out of the girl who always worked very hard and would finally appeal to a wide, wide audience with her first Broadway musical. She married again, much more worldly Richard Halliday who finally gave up his career as a film story editor to watch and ward over hers for the thirty wonderful years to follow before he died. Once all those ""darlings"" and ""blesseds"" and ""adorables"" clear the windpipe, it's just what you'd expect--as sweet and simple as do re mi so can an audience be fa behind. Not by much.
