This fine animal book is about a dingo and a small boy in Australia. Except for the ending, it is told with dramatic freshness and very little sentimentality. When Small was six and recuperating from an illness, he found and raised a wild pup in secret. Years later, the full grown dingo becomes the hunted killer of Small's father's sheep. In trying to protect the animal from the traps, Small is torn between affection and the knowledge of economic necessity. Unobtrusively, the book provides a record of Australian nature, history and development.
