Another star for Mary Stolz -- for this story of Bessie's third year in a New England woman's college, in diary form, is a sensitive record. Bessie is smart, levelheaded and she loves life, people and writing but -- she is fat and has her problems. Her family is dreamy and ironically unrepressive, letting Bessie have complete freedom to think and act as she pleases -- and to overeat, and thereby limit her social life by her unattractive figure. Junior year at college disciplines and rewards her as she makes new friends, sympathizes with their problems and is encouraged in her writing. Her room-mate, who is a dance major, one of her ex-beaux, Professor Dunn and his inspiring family are all part of this young personal history which has joy and wisdom to offer its contemporaries.
