Beginning readers at third grade level should be able to read this to themselves, while somewhat younger children would enjoy it read aloud. A sympathetic story of a little girl in a suburban New York town starts her summer vacation with very few interesting prospects and no friends at all. But it all turned out ever so nicely, as a house, a small lost dog, a spacious yard no one was using, gave Betsy some original ideas and brought her a ""gang"" of friends. New values for Betsy led to success as a member of a group and eventually to the happy purchase of the Proud House by her parents. Good material for this age level. Too bad the date makes it late for our Summer Reading list- but add it when the date rolls around. Clear, legible type.
