Unknown to them, young George and his sister Elizabeth on the long and treacherous journey from Philadelphia to Virginia are transporting a treasure of gold on which the American Revolution depends. Then George becomes aware that his trip to his cousins' home is not only to seek safety, he is determined to carry out this important mission with alacrity. One step ahead of the Redcoats, they befriend a neutral artist and finally reach Jefferson's headquarters where they are warned to beware of traitors. The next 8 months at Orofax are exciting ones in which George and Andrew alert to any strange situation finally uncover the identity of two Loyalists, one, the artist, the other, the household tutor, and save the gold for the Revolution, proving the validity of Jefferson's idea: ""It is each man's assuming the responsibility that is his that wins a war and makes a nation"". Despite a certain rigidity in writing, the adventure and its historical setting should appeal to many.
