WHITE MANE

This was originally reported on p. 531 of the August 15th bulletin after having seen galleys alone. Now with a final copy of the book at hand here is our revised comment- with opinion lowered even further... ""This is the story taken from the film ""White Mane"" illustrated with 43 superb photographs. The leader of a herd of wild horses, living on a spit of land off the southern coast of France, is sought by the horse herders. Captured, he escapes. He antagonizes the crude leader of the herders who promises him to Folco, a fisherboy. And Folco captures him, gentles him- and, when he knows the men mean him harm, chooses to plunge into the Rhone with him rather than risk capture. The text is really bad, amateurish and awkward; the pictures make the book.
