Much fun to be had from this British picture story based on visual jokes and double-entendres reminiscent of Jonas' The Trek. A small black boy and his dog are looking for friends to go with them to the circus. The several animals depicted as solid and realistic are suggested by the many ambiguous forms: toys, pictures, as object like coat on a hook which shares qualifies with the elephant in the same picture. Cutout windows and doors are cleverly devised to add amusing visual effects. All is lightly strung together by the search for tickets, which are hidden in the pictures. Also to be found are humorous details and repetitions, all delineated by Porter's cheerful watercolors. Minimal text; should delight the youngest.
