Palmer Kingston--ace reporter for the Tribune in the small city of Marlinsport, Florida (Neon Flamingo)--now lives in a Spanish mansion he shares with girl reporter A.C. Egan of the rival Times, and collections of neon signs and vintage cars. At the moment he and A.C. are in heavy competition uncovering stories of local corruption in high places. Rumors of crooked developers, bought-off city council members, and a Mayor who takes bribes have brought Kincaid Treaster--one-time hometown boy, now a US attorney--to Marlinsport to lead an investigation. His heavily publicized arrest of the Mayor is only the beginning as an elderly Italian restaurant owner commits suicide (or is it murder?); Palmer does battle with his hostile new publisher; and Treaster is found stabbed to death. His killing and the unexpected motive behind it provide an action-filled conclusion. Overly busy but mostly engaging--and much enhanced by its likable journalist-sleuth.
