The Kroft name was well-known among local athletic enthusiasts; David's father, his uncles, even his older brother Don were skillful baseball players. David, despite his earnest desire to maintain the family tradition, was no better than mediocre, and his errors were costly for his team. When a broken leg put Don out of commission for the season, David felt particularly responsible for carrying on the Kroft reputation, even though his family applied no pressure. With conscientious practice his game steadily improved, and by the end of the summer he realized that he would probably never be an outstanding player but was satisfied to have done his best. the author has written numerous sport stories for this age group and has captured the tension of a little league game. Sturdy and standard.
