This is a sympathetic historical and biographical study of those states of India under the rulers who are, in their own right, Princes supreme in their powers. In the complications of the Indian question, these literally hundreds of Princes and states, varying in size and strength, but numbering among their inhabitants some eighty million people, are often put aside. The Princes are loyal to the Crown and Empire, and not anxious for changing their allegiance to an independent, unprotected India, dominated by the Congress Party. The counter-suggestion advanced of a redivision of India into states ruled by chosen Princes will find few sympathizers. But the colorful biographies of the Princes themselves makes lush, dramatic reading.
