In a simple story based on the English game of Pooh-sticks, Burns follows two toy ducks on their journey down a winding stream. ""Go ducks go/Down the wary waterfall/Near the sleeping fish/Between the silent swans. . ."" As the ducks float downstream, two small children and their parents on the stream's bank follow the ducks' adventures--down the dark hole, past the paper boat, around the spinning whirlpool. And when the ducks land on the golden sand, they are scooped up and taken back to begin again. With minimal text, Burns conveys the pleasures of a leisurely afternoon in the country. The award-winning Australian illustrator uses a predominately brown palette--softened by muted blues, greens and pinks--to suggest the coming of fall and the calmness of the ducks on their journey.
