Bu has formed the inspiration for Collis' previous (non-fiction) books. Now, in fiction guise, he tells the story of a young Irish painter who is commissioned to do the portraits of a Burmese nobleman and his family. There are sundry new twists to the plot, but there's the old familiar feel of Anglo-Eastern stories, with British smugness contrasted with the fascination of the natives and their lives- with the complexities of adjustment when a girl returns to the East after an education in England, and so on. Somehow opera bouffe in spite of the color and drama of the setting.
