First published in 1875, the fairy tales of Mrs. Molesworth have survived for over four generations. In this collection of seven stories the distinct character of the author's work is revealed. Strong in plot and somewhat weak in wonder, they are nonetheless readable and engrossing despite their essential Victorian flavor and their consistent core of sanguine and sweet morality. Lacking the horror and scope of Grimm and Andersen, the world of Mrs. Molesworth turns gently against a rainbow infused horizon.
