KIRKUS REVIEW

A biography that has many of the elements of drama and fiction, and should appeal to those who like Bertita Harding's Golden Fleece, etc. Against a background of a Europe, torn by dissensions over minor powers and later by the sweep of Napoleon's aggressions, Paleologue tells the story of Alexander, son of the mad Paul, at whose death he connived, on to his own strange last years, as mystic and cynic, obsessed with religion, strange contrast to the gay and sensual atheist of his youth. This biography encompasses the most important half century of Russian history, between the reign of Ivan the Terrible and the Bolshevist regime. A powerful and arresting story, almost fantastic, in its paradoxes.
