A story of old Ireland and ancient Britain, rooted deep in legendary history, and with the flavor of a saga in the content and telling. It is the story of brothers, successively taking up the challenge of Fergus, who thirsts for combat and death. Of how this led to involvement in the battles between kings of different parts of the isles, to a siege in which brave men fought and died. Of the love of a one-handed man for a mysterious dark-haired woman. One senses symbolism back of it all, symbolism linked with Ireland's unwritten history. But even without that phase being very clear to the average reader, the story of combat has no mightier chronicler than Maurice Walsh.
