Publisher: Doubleday

Mr. Charles Dillon Stengel, the Casey of the title, is an intelligent man of 74 who manages one of the most incompetent major league ball teams ever seen -- the New York Mets. As a manager he may be brilliant or inadequate, and many a punch is thrown about this, but he is incontestably one of the great clowns of the century. Allen has missed no crazy, colorful aspect of what he calls ""this wondrous man."" His aged elfishness, his incomparably shattered English prose, and his great wisdom all contribute to a richly amusing portrait of a man who has literally made a wretched ballteam into a box-office smash hit. As the top--and actually only--banana of this carnival he enabled it to draw 1,750,000 to the park in '64. Allowing for duplication and illiterates, all the rest should buy this book. Maseltov, Maury
