THE WORLD OF DAVID DUBINSKY

A timely and challenging book, and for anyone objectively and, intelligently interested in the labor movement in this country and in the basic quality of its leadership, an especially rewarding book. This is the saga of an immigrant youth from Russia and a prison camp who forty years later is one of our outstanding citizens, and head of the most powerful progressive and responsible union in the United States- the International Ladies' Garment Workers' Union, with a membership estimated at 440,000. Particularly significant today is the consistent record of the Union in the fight against Communism. Dubinsky- as did many other top flight labor leaders- refused to yield an inch, either in labor affairs or in politics, to Communist pressures. In the vanguard under Dubinsky's leadership, the I L G W U went into many fields of social betterment,- medicine, housing, education, philanthropy. Hundreds of millions of dollars went through their hands, with never a whisper of mismanagement. In the limelight of today's investigations, this is important evidence on the side of unions, proof of the importance of good union policies in relations between leaders and their constituents and the public.
