The scene shifts from a mail theft to the delivery of that mail ten years later and messes up a marriage and a decade old murder and robbery. Martha opens her husband's mail, finds an old blackmail letter, and lets the doubts of the years eat away at her happy, secure marriage. George in turn demands faith which Martha's Vermont conscience withholds until she has tracked down all those involved in the case in which George had given convicting evidence and when her research ends in another death, she tries suicide, sure that George is doubly guilty. A confession rights some of the wrongs- and wrongs Martha for her lack of trust. Contrived but persuasive in its cleverness.
