EXCHANGE SHIP

Publisher: Farrar & Rinehart

Heaped up, packed down and running over with human interest and anecdotal material, this record of the A P Chief, formerly of the Tokyo bureau, confirms and expands the horror stories that have permeated the country since the landing of the exchanged prisoners from the Gripholm. Diplomats, missionaries, newspapermen, who had spent months of incredible hardship and cruelty in Japanese prisons, pooled their experiences, checked and double checked, until the record is a true one. There is some flashback to the pre-war period; there is an excellent profile of Tojo, virtual dictator; but in the main, this is the record of the treatment accorded Americans after December 7th. If any further proof were needed of the perfidy, cruelty, inhumanity of the Japs, here it is. Absorbing reading, though there is almost too much horror.
