It is required of a man ghat he should share the passion and action of his time at peril of being judged not to have lived"", so spoke Justice Holmes in his stirring Memorial Address in Keene, New Hampshire. He lived to the full the test he set for others. The Holmes-Pollock Letters proved that there is a growing Holmes' ""cult"". This is a book to foster it. There is little that one can call original (most of it has been said and can be found in other volumes on Holmes), but the author has collected what he felt was the best in the Judge's writings -- his speeches, opinions and letters, with the author's keen comments to weld it into a whole. Lawyers must have the book, since it is essentially Holmes himself; lovers of great literature will find it enchanting; amateur philosophers will be tantalized. A book for all who take pride in one of our great Americans.
